How Do I Choose a Network Adapter?

During the installation of Windows EBS on the Management Server, Security Server, and Messaging Server, the Installation Wizard automatically detects the network adapters that are available. You must choose one network adapter on each of these servers to connect to your local area network (LAN).

When you choose the internal network adapter, verify that it is physically connected to your LAN.

In addition, during the installation of Windows EBS on the Security Server, you must choose a second network adapter to connect the Security Server to the Internet. This adapter is referred to as the external network adapter. (If your Security Server has only two network adapters, the external network adapter is selected automatically after you choose the internal adapter.) Later during the installation of Windows EBS on the Security Server, you physically connect the external network adapter to the Internet, or to your existing firewall or edge gateway device if you choose. When this process is complete, the Security Server is the default gateway for the computers on your network.

Note

The Installation Wizard lists the status of each network adapter that is detected. If you have multiple adapters on your server, and you are unsure about which adapter to select, temporarily unplug the cable from an adapter to see the status change in the list of adapters.

Note

If the Installation Wizard does not detect a network adapter on your server, you may need to pause the Installation Wizard to access the operating system. For example, you may need to install a driver for the adapter. For more information, see Accessing Windows Server 2008 During Installation.

If unused network adapters remain on your Management Server, Security Server, and Messaging Server after you install Windows EBS, they are disabled automatically to reduce potential security risks to your network.
