Assign Your IP Addresses

Each of the servers that are running Windows EBS requires a name, a static IP address, and a subnet mask.

You should name your servers descriptively, with unique names that are easily identifiable on the network. The names you provide are concatenated with your network domain name to build unique fully qualified domain names (FQDN) for each server for DNS resolution.

Important

A FQDN (in the form, {server name}.{network domain name}) cannot exceed 64 characters.

Important

The server names that you select are assigned permanently to the servers running Windows EBS. The servers cannot be renamed later.

When you install Windows EBS into an existing environment, you assign a static IP address for each network adapter on each computer running Windows EBS. Each computer running Windows EBS has one network adapter that connects it to your internal network. When you assign the static IP addresses for each of the internal network adapters, you can use any valid IP address that is compatible with your current network addressing.

The Security Server has an additional network adapter that connects it to the Internet. You should configure this adapter with the IP address for your existing Internet gateway. This is necessary to make the Security Server the default gateway for the computers on the network.

You can continue to use your existing gateway device, if desired, in addition to the Security Server. However, it must be reconfigured with a new IP address. If you choose to retain your existing gateway device, the Installation Wizard guides you to manually reconfigure it with a new address during the Security Server installation.

Note

To determine the IP address of your existing Internet gateway, you can run ipconfig from a command prompt on a computer attached to your network. In most cases you can use the default gateway address listed in the command output as the IP address of the external network adapter for the Security Server.
