Create a new media pool

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

To create a new media pool

  1. Open Removable Storage.

  2. If Removable Storage is in Full view, in the console tree, right-click Media Pools, and then click Create Media Pool. Or, to create a new media pool within another media pool, right-click the applicable media pool and then click Create Media Pool.

If Removable Storage is in Simple view, on the View menu, click Full, right-click Media Pools, and then click Create Media Pool. Or, to create a new media pool within another media pool, on the View menu, click Full, right-click the applicable media pool and then click Create Media Pool.

  3. On the General tab, in Name, type a name for the new media pool; then, in Description, type a relevant description.

  4. Under Media Information, click Contains media of type, and select the appropriate media type from the list.

  5. Under Allocation/Deallocation policy, do one or more of the following:

    • To automatically draw unused media from a free media pool when needed, select the Draw media from Free media pool check box.

    • To automatically return media to a free media pool when no longer needed, select the Return media to Free media pool check box.

    • To set an allocation limit for media in this media pool, select the Limit reallocations check box, and then change the default value as necessary.

  6. On the Security tab, if the user(s) is not listed in the Group or user names box, click Add, and then complete the Select Users, Computers, or Groups dialog box.

  7. In the Permissions foruser name box, select the Allow check box for the Use, Control, and Modify permissions.

Notes

  • To complete this procedure, you need the appropriate administrative credentials for the affected Removable Storage item. To maintain system security, rather than logging in as an administrator, log in as a user without administrative credentials, and run Removable Storage as an administrator by right-clicking the Computer Management icon, clicking Run As, and choosing an account in the local Administrators group.

  • To open Removable Storage, click Start and then click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management. In the console tree, double-click Storage and then click Removable Storage.

  • You can create media pools within application media pools only. You cannot create new media pools within free, unrecognized, or import media pools.

  • To create a media pool or a sub-pool beneath the parent media pool, a user must have Control permissions on the Root pool. The Control permission enables users to create media pools.

Information about functional differences

  • Your server might function differently based on the version and edition of the operating system that is installed, your account permissions, and your menu settings. For more information, see Viewing Help on the Web.
