Store Messages on Multiple Disk Drives

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

Use this procedure to store messages on multiple disk drives.

Message Queuing performance can be improved by storing the various files used to implement messaging across several physical disks. Message Queuing can use three different disks to implement message functions. For the best messaging performance on Message Queuing servers, put the messaging (*.mq) files, message log files, and transaction log files on separate physical disks.

You can use this procedure to store messages on multiple disk drives.

Membership in <Domain>\Domain Users, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

To store messages on multiple disk drives

  1. Click Start, point to Run, type compmgmt.msc, and press ENTER to display the Computer Management MMC console.

  2. In the console tree, right-click Message Queuing.

    Where?

    • Computer Management/Services and Applications/Message Queuing
  3. Click Properties.

  4. On the Storage page, type a different drive letter and path as applicable in Message files folder, Message logger folder, or Transaction logger folder.

  5. If prompted to stop the Message Queuing service, click Yes.

  6. If prompted to restart Windows, click Restart Now.

Additional considerations

  • By default, Message Queuing stores all message files, log files, and transaction log files in the %windir%\System32\msmq\storage folder on the computer where Message Queuing is installed.

Note

%windir% is a placeholder for the location of the Windows directory. To determine the value associated with the %windir% environment variable type echo%windir% at a command prompt and press ENTER.
