Define a security template

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

To define a security template

  1. Open Security Templates.

  2. Right-click the folder where you want to store the new template and click New Template.

  3. In Template name, type the name for your new security template.

  4. In Description, type a description of your new security template, and then click OK.

  5. In the console tree, double-click the new security template to display the security areas and navigate until the security setting you want to configure is in the details pane.

  6. In the details pane, right-click the security setting you want to configure and click Properties.

  7. Select the Define this policy setting in the template check box, edit the settings, and then click OK.

Notes

  • Performing this task does not require you to have administrative credentials. Therefore, as a security best practice, consider performing this task as a user without administrative credentials.

  • To open Security Templates, click Start, click Run, type mmc, and then click OK. On the File menu, click Open, click the console that you want to open, then click Open. In the console tree, click Security Templates.

  • Only administrators have the permissions to make any changes to the default security template folder, which is:

    systemroot\Security\Templates
