I cannot deploy Connection Manager using the Setup Configuration Wizard on computers that are running 64-bit editions of Windows Vista

Cause: The version of Connection Manager that is included with Windows SBS is not compatible with 64-bit editions of Windows Vista.

Solution: Manually configure a VPN connection and then use Remote Desktop Connection to remotely access the Windows SBS network from a client computer that is running the 64-bit edition of Windows Vista.

To create a VPN connection from a 64-bit client computer that is running Windows Vista to the server

  1. From a client computer that is running Windows Vista, click Start, and then click Connect To.

  2. Click Set up a connection or network, and then click Connect to a workplace.

Note

If you have an existing VPN connection, you are prompted either to create a new connection or to use an existing connection. Accept the default of No, create a new connection, and then click Next.

  1. On the How do you want to connect? page, select the type of connection to use for the VPN connection (either through the Internet or dial-up).

  2. On the Type the Internet address you want to connect to page, do the following:

    1. In the Internet Address text box, type either the Internet address, such as contoso.com, or the IP address of the server.
    2. In the Destination Name text box, type a description for this VPN connection (for example, Windows SBS VPN Connection).
    3. Select the Don't connect now, just set it up so I can connect later check box.

  3. On the Type your user name and password page, do the following:

    1. In the User name text box, type the user name of the person who will use the connection.
    2. In the Domain (optional) text box, type the domain name for the Windows SBS network.
    3. Click Create.

Important

It is recommended that you not enter the user password at this time. When the VPN connection is attempted, the user is prompted for the password. Additionally, it is recommended that you enter the Windows SBS domain name at this time, even though the text says it is optional.

  1. After the connection is created, click Close.

  2. Click Start, and then click Connect To.

  3. Accept the User Account Control prompt.

  4. Right-click the name of the connection that you just created, and then click Properties.

  5. On the Properties page of the VPN connection, click the Networking tab.

  6. Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Advanced.

  7. On the Advanced TCP/IP Settings page,click the DNS tab.

  8. In the DNS suffix for this connection text box, type the internal Windows SBS domain name (for example contoso.local).
