Upgrading to IIS 7

Applies To: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista

You can move Web sites and applications to Internet Information Services (IIS) 7 in two ways: upgrading and migrating. Upgrading is installing the operating system and IIS 7 on an existing server that is running an earlier version of Windows. Migrating, on the other hand, is installing an operating system and IIS 7 on a new server and then moving, or reinstalling, existing Web sites and applications on that server. Both processes involve minimal service outage for users who are accessing Web sites and applications. Additionally, migrating users should retain most of their original configuration settings. This document outlines the steps to take in planning an upgrade to IIS 7.
