Fax Activity

Applies To: Windows Server 2008 R2

You can use Fax Service Manager to do the following:

  • Manage the Fax service
  • Configure parameters for sending and receiving faxes
  • Configure logging to track events and the use of fax resources in your organization
  • Configure delivery receipts

Aspects

The following is a list of all aspects that are part of this managed entity:

Name Description

Fax Archiving Configuration

You can use Fax Service Manager to configure archiving for faxes that are successfully sent or received. You can specify for how many days faxes are kept in the archive. If you do not specify a value, faxes will remain in the archive until they are deleted manually.

You can also track the size of the archive by setting maximum and minimum quota limits. A maximum quota limit specifies the size at which an event warning will be issued. A minimum quota limit represents the size at which the archive event warning is reset. This means that once the maximum limit is reached and an event is issued, the event will not be issued again until the archive size drops below minimum limit.

Fax Delivery Receipt Configuration

Fax delivery notification receipts provide users with information about the success or failure of their sent faxes. Depending on what version of Windows you are using, you can enable users to receive delivery receipts through a message box or an e-mail.

Once you have enabled and configured the receipt option in Fax Service Manager, a user sending a fax using Windows Fax and Scan (or using Fax Console in Windows XP) has the option to select that an e-mail will be delivered to confirm whether a sent fax has been delivered. The user must specify a valid e-mail address to which the receipt will be sent. Incoming faxes can also be routed to e-mail. When specifying SMTP settings, you can select that these settings will also be used for incoming routing by selecting the Use these SMTP settings for the Route Through E-Mail incoming routing method check box.

Fax Queue Configuration

Fax queues contain faxes that are waiting to be processed. You must be a member of the Administrators group to:

  • View and manage incoming faxes in the fax queue in the Incoming folder of Windows Fax and Scan.
  • View and manage outgoing faxes in the fax queue in the Outbox folder of Windows Fax and Scan.

Regular users can view and manage their own faxes in the Outbox folder.

Fax Server Activity Logging

A fax activity log provides you with detailed information about incoming and outgoing fax traffic. It can help you track users' fax activity, track performance, and identify problems and bottlenecks.

The activity log has two text files, InboxLOG.txt and OutboxLOG.txt, which are located in %systemdrive%\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows NT\MSFax\ActivityLog.

Fax Server Configuration

You can install the Fax Server role using Server Manager. After the role is installed, you configure the server using Fax Service Manager to set up fax devices, enable routing rules, and manage Fax Service Providers.

Fax Service Availabililty

After the Fax Server role is installed, the Fax service runs under the Network Service account.

The Fax service depends on the following services:

  • Plug and Play. Enables a computer to recognize and adapt to hardware changes with little or no user configuration.
  • Print Spooler. Manages all local and network print queues, and controls all printing jobs.
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC). Services applications using RPC or COM services.
  • Telephony. Provides telephony API (TAPI) support for clients using programs that control telephone-based devices and IP-based voice connections.

Received Fax Status

You can use Fax Service Manager to control and monitor incoming fax reception.

Sent Fax Status

You can send a fax using the Windows Fax and Scan feature—either using a fax device attached locally or a fax server. (You need to use a computer running Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Enterprise, Windows Vista Ultimate, or Windows Server 2008 to do this.)
