Distribution through Group Policy

Applies To: Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2

Rights templates may also be deployed through group policy. For this to work you first need to package your template files into an MSI package. An MSI package is a Windows Installer definition file that includes files to be deployed and instructions on what to do with them. Explaining how to create an MSI package is beyond the scope of this document, for instructions on different alternatives to create MSI packages see: Packaging Software for Deployment.

Once you have an MSI package, refer to the Deploy the RMS Client by using Group Policy section in this document. This section provides step-by-step instructions for deploying an MSI package via GPO.

Once this is done, it is also necessary to deploy the configuration indicating where the templates are located. You can do this via GPO as well by using the ADMX file as described in the Configuration and Policy Deployment through Group Policy Objects section of this document.
