Verify that the Smart Card Is Installed Correctly

Smart card Plug and Play can detect a smart card when the user is at the logon screen. Smart card Plug and Play does not require administrator privileges. If no smart card driver is installed, when the user inserts a smart card into the reader at the logon screen on a computer that is a domain member, Windows attempts to download and install the driver for the smart card.

If the driver is installed successfully, the option to log on to Windows with the smart card is displayed.

If the smart card driver is not installed, the following window is displayed.

If the user has successfully logged on to the computer and inserts a smart card in the reader, a Plug and Play–compatible smart card is listed in Device Manager in the Smart cards node.

To verify that the Plug and Play–compatible smart card is listed in Device Manager

  1. Click Start, type Device Manager in the Search programs and files box, and then press ENTER.

  2. Double-click the Smart cards node. The smart card should be listed as shown below.

If the smart card is not detected when the smart card is inserted in the reader or if the Smart cards node is not listed in the Device Manager, one of the following may be true:
