Monitoring the status of Forefront UAG services

On a daily basis, you should check the status of services on your Forefront Unified Access Gateway (UAG) servers to confirm that the required services show “Started”; especially the services that are configured to start automatically when the computer is started.

Note

When a Forefront UAG array is configured, you should check services for each array member.

Forefront UAG administrators should monitor the following services as follows:

  • Monitoring Forefront Threat Management Gateway services

  • Monitoring Forefront UAG services

  • Checking the status of Forefront UAG services

Monitoring Forefront Threat Management Gateway services

The following table describes the Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG) services that require monitoring.

Microsoft Forefront TMG Firewall

Provides Forefront TMG internet access protection services.

Runs Forefront Threat Management Gateway jobs according to specified job schedules.

isaManagedCtrl

Microsoft Forefront TMG Managed Control

Controls Forefront Threat Management Gateway managed services.

ISASTG

Microsoft Forefront TMG Storage

Provides Forefront Threat Management Gateway configuration storage.

To monitor Forefront TMG services

  1. On the taskbar, click Start, click All Programs, click Microsoft Forefront TMG, and then click Forefront TMG Management.

  2. Click the Monitoring node, and then click the Services tab. The services should display a status of Running.

Microsoft Forefront UAG File Sharing

Provides remote access to internal file structures.

Microsoft Forefront UAG Log Server

Collects log messages and performs automatic cleanup of log files.

MonitorMgrCom

Microsoft Forefront UAG Monitoring Manager

Collects monitoring information and forwards it to the Web Monitor.

uagqessvc

Microsoft Forefront UAG Quarantine Enforcement Server

Evaluates endpoint settings against NAP servers.

SessionMgrCom

Microsoft Forefront UAG Session Manager

Manages data from endpoint sessions.

UserMgrCom

Microsoft Forefront UAG User Manager

Authenticates user and provides user information.

Checking the status of Forefront UAG services

Use one of the following methods to monitor the status of Forefront UAG services:

  • Open the Services MMC snap-in to view the status of all services running on a Forefront UAG server. From a command prompt, run services.msc to open the Services snap-in.

  • On the taskbar, click Start, click Administrative tools, and then click Services.

  • If Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 is deployed, you can use the Forefront UAG management pack (version 4.0.1095.0) to monitor services on the Forefront UAG servers. The Forefront UAG management pack monitors the following services by default:

    • ConfigMgrCom

    • MonitorMgrCom

    • UserMgrCom

    • SessionMgrCom

    • iphlpsvc

    • DnsAlgSrv
