Message Text

Initialization of inbound authentication failed with error %1 for Receive connector %2. The authentication mechanism is %3. The source IP address of the client who tried to authenticate to us is [%4].

Explanation

This Error event indicates that the initialization of inbound authentication from the specified source on the specified Receive connector failed. The authentication error and the authentication mechanism are specified in the text of the error message.

The following authentication methods are available for inbound connectors on a Receive connector:

  • None
  • Transport Layer Security (TLS)
  • Mutual TLS authentication
  • Basic authentication
  • Basic authentication only after starting TLS
  • Exchange Server authentication
  • Integrated Windows authentication
  • Externally Secured

In the Exchange Management Console, you set the accepted authentication methods for inbound connections on the Authentication tab of the Receive connector properties page.

In the Exchange Management Shell, you set the accepted authentication methods for inbound connections by using the following parameters on the Set-ReceiveConnector cmdlet:

  • AuthMechanism
  • DomainSecureEnabled
  • RequireTLS

User Action

To resolve this problem, verify that the Receive connector and the remote client are configured to use a common authentication method by using the correct credentials and required certificates.
