Process %1 (PID=%2). An remote procedure call (RPC) request to the Microsoft Exchange Active Directory Topology service failed with error %3 (%4). Make sure that the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service is running. In addition, make sure that the network ports that are used by RPC are not blocked by a firewall.

Explanation

This Error event indicates that a remote procedure call (RPC) to the Microsoft Exchange Active Directory Topology service failed. RPC is an interprocess communication (IPC) mechanism that enables seamless communication between client and server applications. In an Exchange environment, the Exchange server that is running on a member server acts as a client to the Active Directory information that resides on a domain controller. This event may occur if the RPC service is stopped or disabled. This event may also occur if the ports that are used by the RPC service are blocked by a firewall.

For more information about RPC and how it works, see What is RPC? and How RPC Works at the Windows Server TechCenter.

User Action

To resolve this error, do one or more of the following:

  • Make sure that the Status of the RPC service is Started.
    • If the Status of the service is Started, stop and then start the service.
    • If the Status of the service is not set to Started, start the service.
  • Make sure that the network ports that are used by RPC are not blocked by a firewall. For more information, see How RPC Works at the Windows Server TechCenter.
Note   RPC generally uses port 135.
  • Make sure that the Exchange server that logged this event is configured to point to a valid DNS server. For more information about how to troubleshoot DNS issues, see DNS Troubleshooting.
