Device Manager 2011 Server Installation

5/4/2012

This section provides information about how to install or upgrade Device Manager 2011 server on a Configuration Manager site server, from a single site server installation to a multiple site server distributed hierarchy. You can install the Service Pack 1 (SP1) version of Device Manager 2011 server on a central or primary site server that is not running Device Manager 2011 server. If a central or primary site server already has Device Manager 2011 server installed, you can upgrade that server to the SP1 version of Device Manager 2011 server.

Install or upgrade Device Manager 2011 server starting with the central site server and then install or upgrade from the top of the hierarchy down. The central and primary site servers must have the latest service packs installed for the operating system and Configuration Manager.

Warning

As you upgrade servers within a hierarchy, there is a transition period in which you have a combination of servers running Device Manager 2011 with no service packs and servers running Device Manager 2011 SP1. This is not supported.

You can install the SP1 version of Device Manager 2011 server on a site server running Configuration Manager 2007 within a hierarchy that includes site servers running Configuration Manager 2007 and site servers running Configuration Manager 2003.

Note

Duplicate embedded collections might temporarily appear on child primary site servers during an upgrade. These will be automatically removed after the child site servers are upgraded. For more information about collections, see Device Collections.

Wizard-based Installation

Grant administrator permissions

After upgrading each site server, you must manually grant permissions to users who need access to the Configuration Manager console and objects on a site server. When you upgrade from Device Manager 2011, the user who is performing the upgrade receives administrator rights for all the objects in the Configuration Manager 2007 console. However, if you had additional users configured to have Configuration Manager administrator rights, they do not receive automatic administrator rights to new objects. For more information about Configuration Manager object security, see Overview of Configuration Manager Object Security and WMI on TechNet.

How to Assign Rights for Objects to Users and Groups in Configuration Manager Help.

Make sure that your system matches the requirements listed in the Server Installation Requirements section.
