Device Imaging in Multiple Site Server Hierarchies

5/4/2012

This section provides information and tips on how to work with device imaging in multiple site server hierarchies. For overview information and examples of the types of hierarchies supported by Device Manager 2011, see the Multiple Site Server Installation Examples section. Remember the following tips when you work with device imaging in multiple site server hierarchies:

  • Each server running Device Manager 2011 can connect to one or more device imaging solutions. The device imaging solution infrastructure is separate from the Configuration Manager hierarchy, but device imaging solutions may, in some cases, share infrastructure with Configuration Manager. However, having the Device Imaging service installed on the central site server lets you distribute new device images to any devices in the hierarchy, depending on the limitations of the device imaging solution.
  • Always create the device imaging request on a primary site server running Device Manager 2011.
  • You can view the status of the deployment from any site server located above the primary site server that you used to create the deployment. However, you can modify the deployment only from the primary site server that you used to create it.
