Installing Device Manager 2011 Client

This section provides instructions for installing Device Manager 2011 client on a device.

The following table shows the device types and device type values for installing Device Manager 2011 client.

For more information about installer file names, see the table in Device Manager 2011 Client Installation.

If you compress the system volume, exclude the following two files after installing Device Manager 2011 client:

  • Edmstate.dat
  • Edmstate.log

Important

If you install Device Manager 2011 client on a device with a compressed system volume and do not exclude these two files, Device Manager 2011 client might not operate as designed and these log files might be corrupted. You must reinstall Device Manager 2011 client to fix this issue.

The following procedure references the tasks in Tasks for Software Distribution with a few modifications, specific to Device Manager 2011.

Important

Make sure you disable write filters before installing Device Manager 2011 client. For more information, see Client Installation Requirements.

To install Device Manager 2011 client on a device

  1. Create a package. For more information, see How to Create a Package.

  2. Create a program. For more information, see How to Create a Program.

    Follow the steps in the Create a Program task with the following changes in the New Program Wizard:

    1. On the General page, in the Command Line box enter the following command:
      msiexec /i <file name> /quiet /norestart devicetype=<device type value>
      For information about device type values, see the device type table that precedes this procedure.
    2. On the General page, in the After running box, select Program restarts computer.
    3. On the Environment page, in the Run Mode box, select Run with administrative rights.
  3. Send a package to distribution points. For more information, see How to Send a Package to Distribution Points.

  4. Create an advertisement. For more information, see How to Create an Advertisement.

    Follow the steps in the Create an Advertisement task with the following changes in the New Advertisement Wizard:

    1. On the Schedule page, click the New icon to add assignments to Mandatory Assignments.
    2. On the Assignment Schedule page, select Assign immediately after this event, and then use the default selection of As soon as possible.
