Sending information about Wi-Fi connections to help discover nearly Wi-Fi

You can help other Windows Handheld device users discover nearby Wi-Fi hotspots by opting to automatically send public Wi-Fi connection data to Microsoft. When you participate, your handheld device will send the network name, service quality, bandwidth, authentication type, and other details about public Wi-Fi networks that you can connect to. We'll use this information to identify and increase the visibility of hotspots near you when you use any of the following features:

  • Show nearby Wi-Fi in Maps

  • Map nearby Wi-Fi in Data Sense

  • Map nearby Wi-Fi in Settings >Wi-Fi

Microsoft does not collect any sensitive personal information to identify you, use location information to track you, or share the information collected with any partners. Also, because this information is only sent via Wi-Fi, you won’t incur any cellular data charges.

To change the settings for Wi-Fi connection information sharing at any time:

  1. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi.

  2. Tap Advanced.

  3. Tap the Send information check box.

Whether or not you choose to participate, you'll still be able to benefit from the data collected by other users.
