Using the Event Viewer Snap-In

Commerce Server 2000 generates events in the Event Viewer snap-in so system administrators can verify that Commerce Server is performing correctly. Event Viewer tracks informational, warning, and error events. The logs in Event Viewer provide an audit record of all Commerce Server events and all Microsoft Windows events, which includes processes such as logon times and connection times.

Windows 2000 records events in three kinds of logs:

  • Application log. Contains events logged by applications or programs. For example, a database program might record a file error in the application log. Your site developer decides which events to record. Use this log to verify the import or export of a catalog.

  • System log. Contains events logged by the Windows 2000 system components. For example, the failure of a driver to load during startup is recorded in the system log. The event types logged by system components are predetermined by Windows 2000.

  • Security log. Records security events such as valid and invalid logon attempts as well as events related to resource use, such as creating, opening, and deleting files. Your system administrator can specify what events are recorded in the security log. For example, if you have enabled logon auditing, attempts to log on to the system are recorded in the security log.
