Creating a Profile Definition

Your system administrator can create generic profile definitions to meet your business needs with the Profile resource in Commerce Server Manager. Generic profile definitions are profile definitions other than user or organization profile definitions, such as an Address profile definition. You use the Profile Editor module to edit and delete profiles created with generic profile definitions.

The system administrator must perform the following tasks before creating a profile definition:

  1. Determine where the profile data will be stored.
  2. Create the space for storing the data, such as adding columns to a database.
  3. Create the data members that will be used to map (connect) each piece of data collected with a profile definition to the place where it will be stored.

The Commerce Server Solution Sites include the following sample profile definitions:

  • Address
  • BlanketPOs (purchase orders)
  • Organization
  • Targeting Context
  • User Object

Five unused data members are included in the User Object profile definition, and five unused database columns are provided so you can add up to five properties to the User Object profile definition and map them without contacting your system administrator to extend your database. For a list of properties included with each profile definition, see Sample Profile Definitions.
