Tuning Windows 2000 Servers

To tune Microsoft Windows 2000 servers, make the following adjustments:

  • If you have installed additional components, such as Chat services, Bulletin Board Systems, or other unnecessary components, uninstall them according to the software uninstall instructions.

  • Change the performance of foreground and background programs. For more information, see the following To change performance to Background services procedure.

  • Maximize throughput for network applications. For more information, see the following To maximize throughput for network applications procedure.

To change performance to Background services

  1. On the Windows 2000 desktop, right click My Computer and select Properties.

  2. Click on the Advanced tab and then click the Performance Options button.

  3. Under Application response, click Background services.

  4. Click OK, and then click OK again.

To maximize throughput for network applications

  1. On the Windows 2000 Desktop, right click My Network Places and select Properties.

  2. Right click on Local Area Connection and select Properties.

  3. Under Components checked are used by this connection, select File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.

  4. Click the Properties button and select Maximize data throughput for network applications.

  5. Click OK, and then click OK again.

Also, consider the following:

  • Commerce Server 2000 and Active Server Pages (ASP) tend to use up the CPU resources.

  • SQL Server is likely to use up the memory or disk resources first.

  • Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) uses more network resources than anything else.
