Adding an Application to a Site

An application is a Web site. An application represents the Web address that a Web client accesses. When you add an application to Commerce Server, the Administration database is updated with the configuration data for the application. When you add a Web server to the application, the Active Server Pages (ASP) files are installed on the Web server computer.

When a Commerce Server site is unpacked, it typically installs two applications: one for the Web site that users access, and one for the Commerce Server Business Desk used to manage that site. An application can use only the resources of the Commerce site it belongs to.

An application includes its own Web servers, which in turn serve the ASP page content for the Web site. An application may include multiple Web servers; it always includes at least one Web server. You can set up an application at the root level of an IIS Web site or at a virtual directory any number of levels below the root.

  • Before performing this procedure, you must create a package file that contains the application you want to add to the site, or use one of the Solution Sites. For instructions about creating a package file, seeĀ Using Site Packager.

To add an application to a site

  1. Expand Commerce Server Manager, expand Commerce Sites, and then expand the site you want to administer.

  2. Click Applications, right-click Applications, point to New, and then click Add Application.

The Add Application From dialog box appears.

  3. Select the package containing the applications you want to add to the site, and then click Open.

Commerce Server Site Packager is started.

  4. In the Select Applications dialog box, verify that the applications you want to unpack are selected, and then click Next.

  5. In the Select IIS Web Sites and Virtual Directories dialog box, verify that the IIS application paths and virtual directories are correct, and then click Next.

  6. In the Unpacking is complete dialog box, review the list of SQL databases and IIS applications that were created. To review the list of events that occurred while Site Packager ran, click View Log File.

  7. To close Site Packager, click Finish.

After you add the application, you must change the non-secured (or secured) host name of your application to the domain name set up on the Domain Name System (DNS) server, for example, www.microsoft.com. For more information, seeĀ Renaming an Application.
