Editing a Product in a Virtual Catalog

You use the Catalog Editor module to edit an existing product in a catalog. For example, you may want to change the categories assigned to the product or the product relationships.

  • You cannot edit the internal name of a product. You can edit the name of the product that appears on your Web site.
  • When you edit a product in a virtual catalog, your changes apply only to the virtual catalog. They are not applied to the associated base catalogs.

To edit a product in a base catalog

  1. In Catalogs, click Catalog Editor.

  2. In the Catalogs screen, select the virtual catalog you want to edit, and then click Open on the toolbar.

  3. In the Catalog Content- <Catalog Name> screen, in the Products section, perform a keyword search, specification search, or click Find All to find the product you want to edit.

    For instructions for finding a product, see Finding Items in a Catalog.

  4. Select the product you want to edit from the Products list, and then click one of the following:

    • Edit in Virtual Catalog to assign the product to new categories in the virtual catalog, and to view which category assignments the product inherited from the base catalog. Any changes you make apply only to the virtual catalog.
    • Edit Base Product to edit the product in the base catalog so both the base catalog and the virtual catalog get the updated data. For more instructions, see Editing a Product in a Base Catalog.
  5. If you selected Edit in a Virtual Catalog, the Catalog Editor - <catalog name> (product) screen appears. In the Assigned Categories section, do the following:

    Use this To do this
    Available Categories Select the category you want to add the product to, and then click Add.

    If you want to remove an assigned category, click Remove.

    Assigned Categories Select the assigned category, and then click Edit if you want to edit the category.

    If you want to create a new category, click New.

    Primary parent category Select the category to be the primary parent category, and then click Set.

    The primary parent category is used to determine the canonical path to that product, or to apply category-level pricing rules to the product.

    Use Category Pricing After you have set the primary parent category, select this option for the product to inherit the price from the category.
    Use Direct Pricing After you have set the primary parent category, select this option for the product to use its own price.
    Refresh After adding new categories to the catalog, click Refresh to display the new categories in the Available categories box.
  6. In the Product Family Relationships section, select the product relationship you want to edit, and then click Edit to change the name of the relationship.

    To change the item or catalog in the product relationship, select the relationship, click Remove, and then click New to create a new relationship.

  7. In the Product Picker dialog box, select the category or product you want in the relationship, and then click OK. To find the categories or products you want, you can browse or perform a keyword search.

    • In the Product Picker dialog box, Commerce Server truncates product names longer than 30 characters. If you have multiple products with the same first 30 characters, they will appear as duplicates.
  8. In the Product Family Relationships section, click Accept. Click New to continue adding more relationships.

  9. To save the product and return to the Catalogs screen, click Save and go back on the toolbar.

  10. To publish the updated virtual catalog on your Web site, click Publish a catalog on the toolbar.

The updated catalog is published on your Web site.
