Overview of Client Policies and Settings

Topic Last Modified: 2012-10-17

This topic provides an overview of the client-related settings and policies that you can configure in Microsoft Lync Server 2010. Lync Server 2010 includes two new tools for managing and configuring your Lync Server deployment:

  • Lync Server 2010 Control Panel   A web-based graphical user interface for managing and configuring servers, users, clients, and devices.

  • Lync Server Management Shell   A management interface with a rich set of Windows PowerShell command-line interface cmdlets and a number of pre-defined scripts.

This topic describes client-related settings that are configurable in Microsoft Lync Server 2010 Control Panel and Lync Server Management Shell. For details about configuring these settings, do any of the following:

  • For details about configuring settings by using Lync Server 2010 Control Panel, see Lync Server Control Panel in the Operations documentation.

  • For details about how cmdlets and parameters map to options in Lync Server Control Panel user interface, see the Lync PowerShell blog article, "UI-to-PowerShell Mapping," at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=202999.

  • For sample scripts and cmdlet reference, see Lync Server Management Shell in the Operations documentation.

  • For information about how Lync Server Group Policy settings compare to Group Policy settings in previous versions of Microsoft Office Communicator, including new, superseded, and unchanged settings, see Migrating User Settings to Lync Server 2010 in the Migration documentation.

In addition to the settings described in this topic, there are certain policies and settings that must be configured before you deploy Microsoft Lync 2010 clients. For details, see Key Client Policies and Settings.

Note

A policy is applied to users or groups of users. A setting or configuration is applied to the Lync Server environment as a whole.

The following table describes the client-related settings that are configurable in Lync Server Control Panel and maps each group of settings to its corresponding Lync Server Management Shell cmdlet or cmdlets.
