How to: Add or Delete a KPI

You add or delete Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to a cube by using the KPI view in Cube Designer in Business Intelligence Development Studio.

You can browse a KPI only if the cube is in a processed state. After you create the KPI, you must process and redeploy the cube before the KPI becomes available to users. For more information about processing, see Processing in Analysis Services.

To add a KPI to a cube

  1. In Business Intelligence Development Studio, open the cube for which you want to create a KPI,

  2. On the KPIs tab, on the toolbar, click New KPI.

  3. In the expressions pane, do the following:

    • In Name, type a name for the KPI.
    • For Associated Measure Group, select a measure group.
    • In Value Expression, create a Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) expression that defines the KPI. You can either type the expression, or you can drag items from the Metadata and Functions tabs in the Calculation Tools pane.
    • In Goal Expression, type an MDX expression that defines the goal for the KPI.
    • For Status Indicator, select a graphic to represent the status of the KPI.
    • In Status Expression, create an MDX expression that computes status.
    • For Trend Indicator, select a graphic to represent trends as the KPI data changes over time.
    • In Trend Expression, create an MDX expression that defines the trend.
    • (Optional) Expand Additional Properties, and then do any one of the following: set a display folder for the KPI, select a parent KPI, create an MDX expression that defines the current time member, enter a weight for the KPI, or type a description for the KPI.

To delete a KPI

  1. Open the cube from which you want to delete a KPI. Click the KPIs tab. The KPIs that are displayed apply to the whole cube.

  2. In KPI Organizer, click the KPI that you want to delete, and then on the toolbar, click Delete.
