Configure a new backup

Applies To: Windows SBS 2008

Note

You must be a network administrator to complete this procedure.

Before you run Configure Server Backup:

  • Make sure that Windows Server Backup is installed on the server.

Note

Windows SBS 2008 installs Windows Server Backup by default. If necessary, you can install Windows Server Backup from the Windows Server Initial Configuration Tasks console or the Server Manager console. For more information see Installing Windows Server Backup.

  • Attach one or more external storage drives to the server. These are external storage drives that you can dedicate for storing backups.

Warning

The Configure Server Backup Wizard formats the external storage drives when it configures them for backup.

  • Decide whether to back up all the data on the server or only certain drives.

  • Decide whether you want to run backups once-a-day or more often.

To configure a backup

  1. Open the Windows SBS Console.

  2. On the navigation bar, click Backup and Server Storage.

  3. If you have not yet configured backup settings: In the task pane, click Configure server backup. The Configure Server Backup Wizard appears.

Note

If you have already configured backup settings and want to back up the server immediately, in the task pane click Backup now.

  1. Complete the wizard by specifying:

    • The external storage drive destinations that you want to back up to

    • The drives that contain the data that you want to back up

    • The schedule for your backup
