Microsoft Optimized Desktop

So, what is a “Microsoft Optimized Desktop?” Simply put, the PC environment offers one of the most immediate connections between your workforce and enabling technology through the applications that they use to collaborate and communicate and the information that they seek to access anywhere. A Windows Optimized Desktop solution at the core is about the application of technologies and best practices applied to specific worker scenarios that result in a better-run IT organisation. It resolves the natural tension between IT goals such as more control, more efficient management, and better security; and worker goals such as more flexibility and speed to do their jobs well.

The Microsoft Optimized Desktop is built on Windows 7 Enterprise, managed by System Center, and then secured by Forefront Endpoint Protection. The Microsoft Optimized Desktop provides virtualization technologies for integrated management across physical and virtual machines and applications, including a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).

Add Office 2010, Windows Internet Explorer 8 and Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP), and your workforce and environment can be more productive, manageable, and secure.

We have put together some overview videos to introduce you to some of the areas as a starter for 10, and have provided next steps to each video which enables you to go deeper into each topic

In addition to this, we have also recorded a few end-user videos that you can use within your organisations to help your internal customers prepare for the latest desktop products.

BitLocker and BitLocker to Go

BitLocker Drive Encryption helps protect data by preventing unauthorized users from breaking Windows file and system protection on lost, stolen or inappropriately decommissioned computers. New for Microsoft® Windows 7, BitLocker To Go is a natural extension of BitLocker Drive Encryption that addresses theft or unwanted disclosure of data made available through physical loss of removable storage devices (e.g., USB Flash Drives, USB Portable Hard Drives).

AppLocker

Windows 7 addresses the growing desire for application control solutions in the enterprise with the introduction of AppLocker: a simple and flexible mechanism that allows administrators to specify exactly what is allowed to run in their desktop environment.
