For the crawler to crawl a content item, the following must be true:

  • The file type, identified by the three or four letter file name extension, must be on the Manage File Types page in Search Administration.

  • The index server must have an IFilter installed for that file type.

  • The file name extension must be associated with the IFilter on the index server.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 includes several IFilters. However, some IFilters that install with Office SharePoint Server 2007 do not add the corresponding file name extension to the Manage File Types page. In this case, you only have to add the file name extension to the Manage File Types page. Additionally, most file types are associated with an IFilter when the IFilter is installed on the index server. For steps on how to associate some file types with the correct IFilter on the index server, see Install the Microsoft Filter Pack (Office SharePoint Server 2007).

Additional IFilters are available from Microsoft and third-party vendors. If necessary, software developers can create IFilters for new file types. If there is no IFilter for a file type that you want to crawl, the index in Office SharePoint Server 2007 can only include the file’s properties, and not the file’s content. For more information, see About IFilters (Office SharePoint Server 2007).

The following table lists the file types supported by the IFilters that are installed by default, which file types are on the Manage File Types page by default, and which file name extensions are associated with an IFilter on the index server.
