Topic Last Modified: 2009-03-30

This topic contains the information that is required to help you select and plan hardware and software changes to a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 deployment. There are three specific paths that you can take to change a farm:

  • Move   Use the procedures for moving a farm or components when you are changing to different hardware. For example, use these procedures if you move to computers that have faster processors or larger hard disks.

  • Migrate   Use the procedures for migrating a farm or components when you are changing to a different platform or operating system. For example, use these procedures if you change from Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008.

  • Upgrade   Use the procedures for upgrading a farm or components when you are changing to a different version of Office SharePoint Server 2007.

Decide whether to move, migrate, or upgrade

The following examples can help you understand the differences between moving, migrating, and upgrading:

-
Changing from a test farm environment to a production environment involves moving a farm. If you have set up a new Office SharePoint Server 2007 farm in a test environment and want to transition to a production environment that uses similar hardware, use the Move to another farm (Office SharePoint Server 2007) procedure.

-
Changing from 32-bit to 64-bit hardware is a migration process. You might have to change to 64-bit hardware if you plan to upgrade to run Office SharePoint Server 2007 in a Windows Server 2008 environment. To change to 64-bit hardware, use the Migrate an existing server farm to a 64-bit environment (Office SharePoint Server 2007) procedure.

-
If you have run out of space on a current database server, you can move the databases to a new, larger disk.

  - If you want to move all the databases that are associated with a farm, use the [Move all databases (Office SharePoint Server 2007)](cc512725\(v=office.12\).md) procedure.

  - If you want to move only content databases, use the [Move content databases (Office SharePoint Server 2007)](cc263037\(v=office.12\).md) procedure.
