RD Licensing Migration: Migrating the RD Licensing Role Service

Applies To: Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2

The following topic covers migration of the RD Licensing role service by migrating Remote Desktop Services client access licenses (RDS CALs).

Follow the steps in these topics to migrate the RDS CALs to the target Remote Desktop license server, and to remove the Terminal Services client access licenses (TS CALs) and RDS CALs from the source license server.

Migrating the RDS CALs to the target server

To migrate Remote Desktop Services client access licenses (RDS CALs), see Migrate Remote Desktop Services Client Access Licenses (RDS CALs).

After you have migrated the RDS CALs to the target Remote Desktop license server, the licenses must be removed from the source license server. You must also configure the RD Session Host server to use the target license server. To configure the RD Session Host server, see Configuring an RD Session Host server to use the target license server in the topic RD Licensing Migration: Verifying the Migration.

Important

The Manage CALs Wizard migrates one license key pack at a time. For example, if there are five license key packs on a source license server and you want to migrate all of them, you will need to run the wizard five times (one time per license key pack).

Removing the RDS CALs from the source server

To remove the RDS CALs from the source license server, see Remove Remote Desktop Services Client Access Licenses.
