Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO)

Applies To: Virtual Machine Manager 2008, Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2, Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 SP1

By using Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO) in System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) 2008, VMM customers can tie specific System Center Operations Manager alerts to remediation actions in VMM. For example, PRO can load-balance virtual machines between physical hosts when specific thresholds are exceeded, or it can migrate virtual machines to a host on a different physical computer after a hardware failure.

The System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 Management Pack, included in the program files for VMM 2008, and the updated VMM 2008 R2 Management Pack, which is included with VMM 2008 R2, provide a basic set of PRO monitors that detect situations in which migrating virtual machines or changing a virtual machine configuration can optimize the performance of a host or a virtual machine. By creating additional PRO-enabled management packs, partners and customers can extend PRO’s capabilities.

The topics in this section provide an overview of PRO and the procedures for enabling and customizing PRO.

Important

Before you can enable PRO, you must integrate Operations Manager 2007 SP1 or Operations Manager 2007 R2 with VMM. For requirements and integration procedures for VMM 2008 and VMM 2008 R2, see Configuring Operations Manager Integration with VMM (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=125948).
