Verifying the WSUS Migration

Updated: July 19, 2011

Applies To: Windows Server 2003 with SP2, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1, Windows Server Update Services, Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials

Verify the destination server configuration

Perform the following procedure in Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) 3.0 SP2 to verify that the destination server is configured and functioning correctly before pointing the WSUS clients and any downstream servers to the new WSUS server.

Verify the new WSUS server settings and functionality

  1. To start the WSUS Administration Console, click Start point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Windows Server Update Services.

  2. In the WSUS Administration Console, expand Computers and verify that all computer groups that existed on the source server are displayed.

  3. Expand Synchronizations. In the Actions pane click Synchronize now. After the synchronization is completed (this may take several minutes), confirm that Succeeded is displayed in the Results column.

If the synchronization fails, click Options. Confirm that the Update Source and Proxy Server settings and password are correct. Confirm that the firewall access is configured correctly for the new server’s environment. Make the necessary changes, and then run the synchronization again.

Confirm that the synchronization was successful before you start the Post-Migration tasks.

Verify client-side functionality

Select a client computer so that you can force a detection to verify that client and server communication is functioning correctly.

To verify client functionality

  1. Open a command prompt.

  2. Type wuauclt.exe /detectnow to force the detection.

  3. After the detection is finished, check the %WinDir%\WindowsUpdate.log to verify that the forced detection was successful.

  4. Or, on Windows® 7, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Vista® systems, you can perform an interactive detection.

    To perform an interactive detection

    1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Windows Update.

    2. Click Check for Updates to detect and verify the correct status for the client computer.
