Preparing a Target Computer for System Center 2012 Components

Updated: May 13, 2016

Applies To: System Center 2012 - Unified Installer

A target computer is the computer where you install a Service Manager 2012 component. The computer where you run Unified Installer is the installer computer. If you are running Unified Installer and Orchestrator on the same computer, then your installer computer is also a target computer and therefore you will need to prepare that computer both as an installer computer and as a target computer.

Each System Center component must be installed on a separate computer. The operating system on the target computer for any of the System Center components must be on drive C.

When you are installing System Center components on the target computer, you must accept the default drive C for the components and for the temporary files that Unified Installer uses. The default drive and folder locations for these files appear on the Installation Destination Location page in the Unified Installer.

There are a few steps you must take to prepare the target computer. When you run the Unified Installer to deploy Service Manager 2012 components, you will be prompted for the source files for the component or components. Use the files that are specified in the following section.

Then, depending on the Service Manager 2012 component, you will be prompted to supply a location for the prerequisites that the component requires. For information about these prerequisites, see System Requirements for System Center 2012 - Unified Installer.

You must edit the following local computer policy settings on the target computer that will host your Service Manager 2012 component:

  • Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Windows Remote Management (WinRM) / WinRM Service / Allow automatic configuration of listeners

  • Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Windows Remote Management (WinRM) / WinRM Service / Allow CredSSP authentication

  • Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Windows Remote Shell / Allow Remote Shell Access

  • Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Windows Remote Shell / Specify maximum amount of memory in MB per Shell

There are two methods you can use to make these changes. You can edit the local Group Policy settings, or you can open a command prompt and run a series of WinRM commands. If you edit the local Group Policy settings, it can take some time for the changes to take effect. If you run the WinRM commands, the changes take effect immediately. To edit the local Group Policy settings, see How to Edit the Local Group Policy on the Target Computer. To run a series of WinRM commands, see How to Run WinRM Commands on the Target Computer.

Downloading Service Manager 2012 Release Candidate

Service Manager 2012 Release Candidate (RC) contains the Unified Installer and the seven System Center components. To download Service Manager 2012 RC, see System Center 2012 Release Candidate.

Note

For this release of the Unified Installer, software for these Service Manager 2012 components must be stored on either a local drive or shared drive. Accessing components on a mapped drive is not supported. Files for each component must be placed in unique folders.

When you download these files, make sure that you expand any compressed files. When you run the Unified Installer and you specify the path to these Service Manager 2012 components, you must specify a path to the component setup file.

Note

In the case of System Center 2012 - App Controller, you will have to uncompress the file that you download using the command AppController.Beta.exe /x:c:\temp, where c: is the drive on which you are running the Unified Installer. Use the correct drive letter in your environment.
