With Microsoft Dynamics CRM, you have several options that help make your deployment run optimally, reliably, and securely. In most situations where Microsoft Dynamics CRM (on-premises) is running in a production environment, we recommend that you apply the latest update for all CRM applications shortly after the update becomes available.

On-premises versions of Microsoft Dynamics CRM use two kinds of update technology:

  • Setup updates, which can be applied as part of the Setup process.

  • Application updates, which are provided as an update package that can be automatically installed by using Microsoft Update.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM Setup update

Microsoft Dynamics CRM Setup update, also known as self-healing Setup, makes sure that you have the latest version of Setup. By using this feature, you can update the Setup program, before it installs anything on the computer, for the following CRM applications:

  • Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server

  • Microsoft Dynamics CRM Reporting Extensions

  • Microsoft Dynamics CRM Report Authoring Extension

  • Microsoft Dynamics CRM Language Pack

  • Microsoft Dynamics CRM Email Router

To use Setup update, select Get updates for Microsoft Dynamics CRM during Setup. For Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook, Setup update applies the latest published application update package (if available) at the end of Setup.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM application updates

Microsoft Dynamics CRM regularly publishes updates in a package format that is a collection of application improvements. Microsoft fully tests and supports installing any published update for Microsoft Dynamics CRM at the time of its release.

Distribution and application of Microsoft Dynamics CRM updates

Microsoft Dynamics CRM on-premises is engineered to use Microsoft Update, a service that can automatically download and install updates to Microsoft applications, such as Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server, Microsoft Dynamics CRM Reporting Extensions, Microsoft Dynamics CRM Report Authoring Extension, Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook, Microsoft Dynamics CRM Language Pack, and Microsoft Dynamics CRM Email Router.

During installation or upgrade of a Microsoft Dynamics CRM application, Setup asks whether you want to opt in, which sets Microsoft Update to apply automatic updates. If you don’t want to apply automatic updates during Setup, you can enable this feature later by turning on automatic updates in the Windows Update area of Control Panel. When you enable Microsoft Update, updates are automatically downloaded for Microsoft Dynamics CRM and for any other Microsoft applications that are enabled to use Microsoft Update.

If you don’t want to use Microsoft Update, you can still download updates from the Microsoft Download Center and manually install them or push them out to the appropriate computers by using Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). More information: Windows Server Update Services.

How are updates packaged?

Each update package file corresponds to a Microsoft Dynamics CRM application and uses the form CRM_version-application-KB_Article_Number-Language-platform.exe. One example is CRM2015-Client-KB3072333-ENU-Amd64.exe, which is Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 Update 1.1 for the 64-bit English (US) version of Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2015 for Outlook.

Should I apply the latest update to my deployment?

In most situations, we recommend that you apply the latest update. Microsoft fully tests and supports installing any generally distributed update for Microsoft Dynamics CRM at the time of its release. Does an update require additional configuration after I install it?

Some individual updates may require a Windows registry modification or require you to run a script to finish. Are updates cumulative?

Yes, update packages are typically cumulative. This means that the problems that are fixed in an update packages are also fixed in later update packages.

Do I have to apply the previous update before I can apply a later one?

In most cases, you don’t have to apply an earlier update because updates are cumulative. However, some updates require an earlier update. More information: Update requirements

How frequently can I expect a new update to be released?

How can I be notified when an update is released?

If you want to know when updates are released for Microsoft Dynamics CRM, you can sign up to receive email notifications. Notifications may include information about security updates, updates to Microsoft Dynamics CRM that address feature requests from customers, or the release of a new version. You can sign up for these email notifications by using either of the two methods that follow.

From a computer that is running a Microsoft Dynamics CRM client application:

  1. Go to Settings > Administration > Product Updates.

  2. In the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Product Updates form, sign in to the Microsoft account service.

  3. Select the Subscribe box, confirm your email format, email address, and privacy options, and then click Continue.

Alternatively, you can receive notifications from the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Team Blog by subscribing to the RSS feed. Posts in a variety of topics are published to the blog almost daily, and when an update is released, you’ll typically receive a corresponding blog post about the release via the RSS feed.

In what order should I apply an update?

For server roles and server role groups, you must apply the same update to them before you bring them back online. Similarly, if you have Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server installed on multiple computers, such as in a Failover Cluster configuration, you must update all the nodes in the cluster before you bring them back online. A mixed deployment of Microsoft Dynamics CRM servers or server roles that are running different update versions is not supported.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook clients typically function correctly when you connect to a CRM server that has the following update deployment configurations:

  • Dynamics CRM for Outlook clients that are running an earlier update than the server, which is running the next update.

  • Dynamics CRM for Outlook clients that are running a later update than the Microsoft Dynamics CRM server, which is running the earlier update.

For optimal user experience, we recommend that you apply updates to your clients soon after you update the servers that are running Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server.

How can I check my computer to see if an update is applied?

On a server that is running the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Deployment Administration Server role, use either of the following methods:

  • Start Deployment Manager. Click Servers and for each server view the version number that is in the Version column that corresponds with the build number of the update.

  • Run the following Windows PowerShell command. The version is listed in the output.

You can check whether an update is applied to a Microsoft Dynamics CRM server or client application by using any of these methods:

  • Open Control Panel, open Programs and Features, click View installed updates, and then look for the Microsoft Dynamics CRM application in the list.

  • View the details of a Microsoft Dynamics CRM binary file, such as the CrmVerServer.dll file, in \Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics CRM\Server for Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server. To view the file details, right-click the file, click Properties, click the Version tab, and then view the file version.
