Troubleshoot using Driving Guidance

This topic contains information about how to troubleshoot problems that can occur when you use Driving Guidance with MapPoint.

I don't see the controls for Driving Guidance in the GPS task pane. Why is that?

The Driving Guidance feature is not supported on computers with screen resolutions less than 1024 by 768 pixels. If you start Driving Guidance with a screen resolution setting below the supported levels, the controls do not display correctly.

I'm having trouble hearing the spoken instructions when using Driving Guidance even though my computer's volume control is set at the maximum level. How can I make it louder?

To get the best audio output from Driving Guidance, check the Master Volume (or Volume Control, depending on your audio hardware and software) and Wave settings on your computer.

To change the volume settings

  1. On your computer, in the Control Panel, open Sounds and Audio Devices.
  2. Click the Audio tab.
  3. Click Volume in the Sound playback section.
  4. Move the Master Volume (or Volume Control) and Wave sliders to the top for maximum volume.

-or-

  1. Double-click the Volume icon in the notification area.
  2. Move the Master Volume (or Volume Control) and Wave sliders to the top for maximum volume.

There are no voice instructions when I use the Driving Guidance feature. Why is that?

First check to see that your computer is running Windows® XP operating system.

Next, check the following possible text-to-speech problems:

The speaker volume is not turned up or is muted. Some speakers have external controls for volume and muting. Make sure the volume is turned up sufficiently or that muting is off.

The speakers may not be selected as the current output device. On the Text-to-Speech tab, click Audio Output to make sure that the speakers are selected.

The speakers might not be connected properly. Consult the speaker hardware documentation for additional information. Make certain that the sound card for the computer is also properly seated, installed and that the correct drivers are available.

The text-to-speech engine may be corrupted. To test for corruption, switch to another engine. If another engine is working properly, reinstall the specific engine from the original source. If no engine is working properly, reinstall the SAPI component from the original source or CD.

If Windows Media® Player 10 series is running, try turning it off.

I missed a turn and got off route. I tried to reroute from my current position to get back on track and the instructions didn't update. What could I have done?

  1. When your current position is not the start of the route and you want to reroute from that position, first turn GPS tracking and Driving Guidance off by clearing the Start GPS tracking check box.
  2. Then, click Route Planner, and use Move Up Move Up icon to move the waypoint for your position to the start of the route in the route list.
  3. Click Get Directions.
  4. Return to the GPS task pane to restart GPS tracking and Driving Guidance by clicking the Start GPS tracking check box.
