Product models (form)

Applies To: Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Feature Pack, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012

Click Product information management > Common > Product builder > Product models. Double-click a product model.

Use this form to view and create product models, and to attach item numbers to product models. The item numbers represent items for the product model. A product model can be active for several items at the same time. However, no more than one active product model can be associated with an item during the same date interval.

Note

This information applies only to Product builder.

In Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012, the procedure for handling versions is the same as the procedure for handling standard bills of materials (BOMs).

Note

We recommend that you do not use this form, because it is being officially deprecated and may be removed, and may not be available in future versions of Microsoft Dynamics AX.

The following tables provide descriptions for the controls in this form.

Buttons

Upper pane

Button

Description

Product model

Build or change the selected product model.

Validation

Create validation rules. By default, these rules are connected to the selected product model. If you want to create a rule for another product model, select the model number in the Version field when you create the rule.

Approve

Approve the selected product model.

Functions

Open a menu with the following items:

  • Compile product model – Compile the code that was created for the product model. During this process, the product model is tested for errors, and the compiled code is stored in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 in the layer that is selected in the Layer field in the Product Builder parameters form.

  • Check rule syntax – Check the syntax of all validation rules that are attached to the selected product model.

  • Copy from product model – Overwrite the selected product model with a copy of another product model.

  • Export product model – Create an external text file that contains a copy of the selected product model.

  • Import product model – Import a product model that you previously exported to a text file.

  • Generate form – Generate a static form, or the Product Builder configuration form, in a language that you select. This form is then opened for the selected product model.

  • Test model – Start a test run of the product model after it is compiled without errors.

    Note

Even if you have not added nodes to the modeling tree, you can click the Test model button to test the form that is created based on the product model's setup.

Setup

Open a menu with the following items:

  • Price combinations – Create price combinations that calculate the sales price of configured items.

    Note

The price is calculated according to the price combinations that are set up if the Sales price calculation check box is not selected in the Product builder parameters form. Otherwise, the standard price calculation for BOMs is used.

  • Generate items and dimensions – Select whether the product model generates new item numbers, configuration IDs, or size and color IDs for configured items. You can also specify how these IDs are formatted.

  • Graphic parameters – Set up graphics for the selected product model. Select which modeling variables influence the graphical representation of the item, which folder drawings for the product model are saved in, and how the file names are generated. You can also set up intervals for the variables. Intervals reduce the number of drawings that you have to create.

  • Options – Select whether the wizard automatically appears when you create a new product model.

Fields

Field

Description

Product model number

Type a unique product model number, which can contain letters and numbers. The product model number is the primary ID that you use to locate product models in all contexts. The Product model number field must be filled in when a new product model is created.

To automatically assign product model numbers to new product models, set up an appropriate number sequence on the Number sequences tab of the Product Builder parameters form.

Name

Type the name of the product model.

Item group

Select an item group, so that you can customize the lookup of the item number. When you search for items that you want to attach to the product model, items that belong to the selected group are displayed on a separate tab.

Note

Item groups are created and maintained under Inventory management > Setup. For more information, see Item group (form).

Approved by

The unique identifier of the worker who approved the product model.

Note

You cannot select the worker in this field. The worker is selected when the product model is approved. To approve the product model, click Approve, and then select any worker who is registered in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 as an approver.

Approved

Indicates that the product model has been approved.

Note

The value cannot be changed manually. To approve the product model, click Approve, and then select any worker who is registered in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 as an approver.

Code saved

Indicates whether the code for the product model has been compiled and saved.

Note

To compile the product model, click Functions > Compile product model.

Rules checked

Indicates whether all of the validation rules have the correct syntax.

Note

The syntax of validation rules is checked when the product model is compiled. To compile the product model, click Functions > Compile product model.

Item number

Select the item that is configurable with the selected product model.

From date

Specify the first date on which the selected item is configurable with the current product model.

Note

The date fields are optional. If you do not specify dates, the version line is valid for all dates.

To date

Specify the last date on which the selected item is configurable with the current product model.

Note

The date fields are optional. If you do not specify dates, the version line is valid for all dates.

Active

Select the check box to make the product model active for the specified item during the specified date interval.

If another product model is active for the same item at the same time, an error message is displayed. Several product models can be registered in the system as active for an item, but only if the date intervals on the version lines do not overlap.

Note

If a date interval is not specified for a registered version line, the version line is valid for all dates. Therefore, the dates on the version line overlap every date interval, and the item for which it is valid cannot have any other active product models.
