Choose a primary key

When you link to data you need to choose the column that will be used as the primary key. You are prompted to choose the primary key on the last page of the Link Data Wizard and Link Territories Wizard.

A primary key is a column with values that not only correspond to, but more importantly, uniquely identify each record in your data. This ensures that MapPoint can recognize specific changed records when you update any map linked to your source data. Again, the values in this column must be unique for each record.

To choose a primary key:

  1. Select the appropriate column name in the Primary key list.
  2. Click Finish to exit the Link Data Wizard or Link Territories Wizard.

Tip  It is recommended that you structure your data source to have the primary key be the first column or data field.
