ADAM port is already in use

[This topic is intended to address a specific issue called out by the Exchange Server Analyzer Tool. You should apply it only to systems that have had the Exchange Server Analyzer Tool run against them and are experiencing that specific issue. The Exchange Server Analyzer Tool, available as a free download, remotely collects configuration data from each server in the topology and automatically analyzes the data. The resulting report details important configuration issues, potential problems, and nondefault product settings. By following these recommendations, you can achieve better performance, scalability, reliability, and uptime. Microsoft® Exchange Server 2007 setup cannot continue because its attempt to install the Gateway Server role detected that the ports assigned for Active Directory® Application Mode (ADAM) synchronization are already being used.

ADAM is a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directory service that is designed specifically for use with directory-enabled applications. ADAM stores and replicates only application-specific information and does not require deployment on a domain controller or depend on the Active Directory service. ADAM does not provide network operating system authentication or authorization.

In Exchange 2007, the gateway server uses ADAM to store configuration information. When ADAM is synchronized with Active Directory directory service, it can also be used to perform recipient lookup for message security.

Microsoft Exchange setup requires that specific ports be available (unused) so that they can be assigned to the ADAM synchronization process when the Gateway Server role is installed.

To resolve this issue, identify and stop the process that is already using the ports required for ADAM or run Exchange 2007 setup with command line switches to override the default ADAM port assignments.

To run setup with an override of the default ADAM port assignments

  1. At a command prompt, type the following:

    Setup.exe /adamport:xxxx /adamsslport:yyyy

    • /adamport:<port number to assign to ADAM>

    • /adamsslport:<port number to assign to ADAM>
