How to Enable Address Rewrite by Using the Exarcfg Tool
Address rewrite must be enabled on the bridgehead SMTP virtual servers that receive mail from the subsidiary company's mail system. Address rewrite will not occur if the message is first submitted to an SMTP virtual server without address rewrite enabled.
Before You Begin
You can download the Address Rewrite tool (exarcfg) from the Downloads for Exchange Server 2003 Web site. After you download the tool, use the following procedure to enable address rewrite on the appropriate SMTP virtual servers.
Before you perform the procedure in this topic, read Deployment Scenarios for Internet Connectivity.
The following permissions are required to perform this procedure:

Procedure
To enable address rewrite by using the exarcfg tool
Download exarcfg to the directory of your choice.
Open a command prompt.
Navigate to the directory in which you installed exarcfg.
Type the following command:
exarcfg -e -s server -v: SMTP virtual server instance number
Where
server is the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the Exchange server on which you want to enable address rewrite.
SMTP virtual server instance number is the number representing the SMTP virtual server instance. If you do not specify the –v option, the command defaults to the first virtual server instance, typically the default SMTP virtual server.
