How to Configure the Default S/MIME Settings in Outlook Web Access

In addition to adding buttons to allow signing and encrypting individual e-mail messages, Outlook Web Access with the S/MIME control adds check boxes to the Options page under E-Mail Security to enable digitally signing and encrypting all e-mail messages by default. The added check boxes are:

  • Encrypt contents and attachments for outgoing messages

  • Add digital signature to outgoing messages

By default, these check boxes are not enabled. When someone composes a message using Outlook Web Access, these options govern whether the message will be signed or encrypted by default. If neither check box is selected (the default setting), the user's messages are not signed or encrypted. However, users can encrypt or sign individual messages from within the message. When one of the check boxes is selected, the corresponding functionality is enabled by default. Either option or both options can enabled. After the check box is selected, users will see the appropriate button on the toolbar selected on all new messages. The user can then override these default settings by clicking the button to clear the option.
