How to Perform a Semi-Automated Directory Synchronization

This topic describes how to perform semi-automated directory synchronization. After you verify that message transfer works between Exchange 2003 and the non-Exchange messaging system, you can implement a semi-automated solution for directory synchronization to provide all users in the company with consistent and complete address lists in their messaging systems.

Before You Begin

For the procedures in this topic, be, it is assumed that you are using Exchange System Manager to extract directory information from the legacy messaging system and Active Directory and to import recipient information into Active Directory using Ldifde.exe.

Warning

Do not use Ldifde.exe on a production server without thorough testing on a reference system. Improper usage can cause serious problems. These problems may require you to reinstall Active Directory, Exchange Server 2003, or both. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that occur when creating, modifying, or deleting Active Directory objects using Ldifde.exe can be solved.

To successfully complete the procedures in this topic, ensure that your environment meets the following requirements:

  • You have Exchange Administrator permissions.

  • You have permissions to read and create organizational units and user accounts in Active Directory.

  • The non-Exchange messaging system supports LDAP, and you have the required permissions to access the non-Exchange directory information.
