How to Start the Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging Service

This topic explains how to use the Services snap-in in Microsoft Management Console (MMC) or cmd.exe at a command prompt to start the Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging service. By default, the Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging service is started after the Unified Messaging server role is installed on a computer that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2007. However, there may be times when you have to restart the Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging service manually, such as when you have taken the Unified Messaging server offline and have to bring it back online.

Note

The default startup time for the Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging service is 120 seconds. You can increase this time-out value by editing the Umrecyclerconfig.xml file that is located in the \Program Files\Microsoft Exchange\bin folder.

When the Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging service is started on a Unified Messaging server, the Unified Messaging server is available to process incoming UM calls.

Important

Installing the Unified Messaging server role and starting the Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging service are only a subset of the tasks that must be performed for the Unified Messaging server to process incoming calls. Before You Begin

To perform this procedure, the account you use must be delegated membership in the local Administrators group for the target server.

Procedure

To use the MMC Services snap-in to start the Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging service

  1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools.

  3. In Administrative Tools, double-click Services.

  4. In the Services result pane, right-click Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging, and then click Start.

To use a command prompt to start the Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging service

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.

  2. In the Open box, type the following command, and then press ENTER.

    net start MSExchangeUM
