Exchange Server 2007 Setup Wizard > Mail Flow Settings Page

Exchange 2007

Applies to: Exchange Server 2007 SP2, Exchange Server 2007 SP1

Topic Last Modified: 2006-10-09

The Mail Flow Settings page only appears when the following conditions are true:

  • You are installing Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 in an Active Directory forest that has an existing Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 organization.

  • You are installing the Hub Transport server role.

  • A routing group connector between Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 doesn't exist.

The Exchange 2007 routing topology is based on Active Directory sites and doesn't use routing groups. However, to support coexistence of Exchange 2007 with earlier versions of Exchange Server, a routing group is created during installation and all Exchange 2007 servers are automatically included in that routing group.

To enable mail flow between Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003, a routing group connector is required between the Exchange 2007 routing group and the routing group in the Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 organization.

You can use the Mail Flow Settings page in Exchange Server 2007 Setup to select a bridgehead server in the existing organization that is a member of the Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 routing group to which you want to create the routing group connector. Then use the Mail Flow Settings page to complete the following operations:

  • Create a two-way routing group connector between the Exchange 2007 routing group and the routing group of which the Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 bridgehead server is a member.

  • Assign a cost of 1 to the routing group connector.

  • Set the Hub Transport server that you are installing as the source server and the Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 bridgehead server that you select as the target server for the routing group connector.

  • Grant the Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 bridgehead server membership in the ExchangeLegacyInterop Universal Security group. This group is assigned permissions that allow the group members to send messages to and receive messages from the Exchange 2007 Hub Transport servers.
