How to Configure X.400 Connectivity in Exchange 2003 When Migrating from a Non-Exchange Messaging System to Exchange Server 2003

This topic discusses how to configure X.400 connectivity in Exchange Server 2003. Because X.400 is supported as a transport mechanism in Exchange Server 2003, you do not need to install a separate connector to configure an X.400 connector.

Before You Begin

Before you perform the procedures in this topic, it is important that you are aware of the following information:

  • When connecting to a non-Exchange X.400 system, you must specify all configuration settings carefully and ensure that they match the configuration of the remote system. Otherwise, the message transfer agents (MTAs) will refuse to communicate with each other and messages will not be transferred.

  • It is vital that you test the connector configuration not by only sending messages from Exchange to a user in the X.400 system, but also by sending messages in the other direction, because message transfer in one direction does not indicate that message transfer in the other direction works as well.

  • When you implement X.400 connectivity, you must work closely with the remote administrator.

To successfully complete the procedures in this topic, ensure that your environment meets the following requirements:

  • You have an existing Windows network, including an Exchange organization, and Active Directory deployment.

  • You can connect to the remote MTA through TCP/IP. It is assumed that you are working in a TCP/IP-based environment. For information about how to configure an X.400 connector over X.25, see the Exchange 2003 product documentation.

  • You have Exchange Administrator permissions to configure connector components in the Exchange organization.

  • You have enabled the options to display routing groups and administrative groups in Exchange System Manager.
