Troubleshooting Interoperability and Migration Issues in Exchange Server 2003

As the previous topics illustrate, integrating Microsoft® Exchange Server 2003 into a non-Exchange environment and migrating users to Exchange 2003 is a complex undertaking that usually involves deployment and configuration of several components included in Exchange 2003, as well as non-Microsoft software. You must deploy correct versions of the software and perform configuration steps in both the legacy system and in Exchange 2003. There are many opportunities to make configuration errors that can adversely affect the interoperability and migration process.

Interoperability and migration issues can be grouped according to the following categories:

  • Message transfer   Messages between the legacy messaging system and Exchange 2003 are lost or stuck in message queues, or result in message loops or non-delivery notifications. For more information about troubleshooting message transfer, see Troubleshooting Messaging Connectivity.

  • Directory synchronization   Recipient information is not synchronized between the legacy messaging system and Exchange 2003, or address lists in either system are incomplete. For more information about directory synchronization issues, see Troubleshooting Directory Synchronization.

  • Calendar connectivity   Users in the legacy messaging system or in Exchange 2003 are not able to query each other's free/busy information when they schedule meetings. For more information about issues with calendar connectivity, see Troubleshooting Calendar Connectivity.

  • Mailbox migration using the Exchange Migration Wizard   The process of extracting messaging data from legacy mailboxes into migration files or importing the data into Exchange 2003 mailboxes fails. For more information about troubleshooting issues with the Exchange Migration Wizard, see Troubleshooting the Exchange Migration Wizard.

The topics in this section describe issues that might arise in messaging environments that include Exchange Server 2003. You will learn how to troubleshoot messaging connectors, directory synchronization, and Microsoft Exchange Calendar Connector. These topics also explain how to handle problems that might occur during a migration from a non-Exchange messaging system to Exchange 2003 using the Exchange Migration Wizard.
