Adding a Storage Group

A storage group includes between one and five databases (mailbox stores and public folder stores) and one set of transaction log files for those databases. You may want to add a storage group when the following conditions are true:

  • You want to have more than five databases on a particular server. For example, to improve the backup or recovery time for each mailbox store, you increase the number of mailbox stores and put fewer users in each store.

  • You have databases with different backup or restore requirements. For example, you have one database that you cannot afford to have offline for more than several hours, even if it must be completely reconstructed.
