Active Directory server software update available

[This topic is intended to address a specific issue called out by the Exchange Server Analyzer Tool. You should apply it only to systems that have had the Exchange Server Analyzer Tool run against them and are experiencing that specific issue. The Exchange Server Analyzer Tool, available as a free download, remotely collects configuration data from each server in the topology and automatically analyzes the data. The resulting report details important configuration issues, potential problems, and nondefault product settings. By following these recommendations, you can achieve better performance, scalability, reliability, and uptime. For more information about the tool or to download the latest versions, see "Microsoft Exchange Analyzers" at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=34707.]

The Microsoft Exchange Analyzer Tool queries the Exchange_DSAccessDC Microsoft Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) class in the ROOT\MicrosoftExchangeV2 namespace to determine the value for the Name property. The Name property specifies the computer name of the domain controller used by the Exchange server for Active Directory directory service lookups.

The Exchange Analyzer then queries the Active Directory for the values of specific attributes of that domain controller to determine the following:

  • If the Active Directory domain controller is running the Windows Server 2003 operating system

  • If the Active Directory domain controller is running a non-English version of the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 operating system

  • If there is a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 server in the Exchange organization

  • If the value for the Version key for the ntdsa.dll file on the server is less than 2700

If the Exchange Analyzer finds that all these conditions are true, the Exchange Analyzer displays a warning.

This warning indicates that Exchange Outlook Web Access clients may have issues with the Exchange Address Book indexing.

Outlook Web Access lets users select the language that they want to use for their user interface (UI). The language that users select determines the locale setting. Outlook Web Access also uses that language to sort Active Directory results, such as the address book. When Exchange runs a Virtual List Views (VLV) query and specifies a language that is not available on the domain controller, an error occurs. This problem occurs because there is currently no default indexing mechanism that enables Exchange to use a different language if the language that is specified for a VLV query does not match the language of the domain controller.

To address this warning, obtain and install the file update referred to by Microsoft Knowledge Base article 919166, "The address book function in Exchange 2007 is broken when an Exchange OWA client and a Windows Server 2003-based domain controller do not have the same locale setting" (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=3052&kbid=919166).
