About This Volume

In addition to the "About This Guide" section that introduces Windows Security and Directory Services for UNIX, Volume 1 comprises two chapters.

Chapter 1, "Overview of Authentication and Authorization Technologies and Solution End States," sets the context for IT projects that integrate heterogeneous Windows and UNIX environments. It describes the five distinct solutions presented in this guide for enabling the two environments to interoperate at the security and directory services level. It also provides some basic technology background by explaining authentication and authorization services and the role of Active Directory® in providing them.

Chapter 2, "Envisioning Your Windows Security and Directory Services Solution," guides project planners through the early stages of planning. It helps to ensure that Windows security and directory services projects are planned in the context of broader organizational and IT goals and offers specific guidance for producing deliverables such as vision/scope documents and risk assessments.
