Tasks for Configuration Manager Client Assignment
Applies To: System Center Configuration Manager 2007, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP1, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2
After a Configuration Manager 2007 client is installed, it must be assigned to a site before it can be managed.
Before assigning clients to a site, ensure that one of the following conditions are true:
The site must be publishing to Active Directory Domain Services, and clients are in the same Active Directory forest as the site server's forest.
There is a server locator point deployed in the Configuration Manager 2007 hierarchy and clients can either automatically locate it, or are directly assigned to it.
The exception to these requirements for site assignment is if you assign a client to an Internet-based site that does not manage clients on the intranet. In this scenario, you directly assign the site to the client and there is no requirement for retrieving information from Active Directory Domain Services, or from a server locator point.
For more information about site assignment, see About Client Site Assignment in Configuration Manager and Determine If You Need a Server Locator Point for Configuration Manager Clients.
