Migrating to the 2007 Release

Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 and Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 will reach end of support on January 9, 2018. To stay supported, you will need to upgrade. For more information, see Resources to help you upgrade your Office 2007 servers and clients.

If you have already deployed Live Communications Server 2005 with SP1 and Communicator Web Access (2005 release) and you are now upgrading to Office Communications Server 2007 and Communicator Web Access (2007 release), the only upgrade path is side-by-side migration.

Note

Collocating Office Communications Server 2007 and Communicator Web Access (2007 release) on the same computer is not supported. If your present deployment includes Live Communications Server and Communicator Web Access (2005 release) running on the same computer, you must deploy the corresponding Office Communications Server and Communicator Web Access (2007 release) on separate computers.
Collocating Communicator Web Access (2007 release) and Communicator Web Access (2005 release) on the same computer is not supported.

One of the new capabilities in Office Communications Server 2007 is enhanced presence. Users can be homed on Office Communications Server 2007 but not be enabled for enhanced presence. Such users cannot connect to Communicator Web Access (2007 release), but they can connect to Communicator Web Access (2005 release).

You can configure the Communicator Web Access (2007 release) server so that it silently redirects such users to a Communicator Web Access (2005 release) virtual server, where they can use the IM and presence features that they are enabled for. Alternatively, you can instruct these users to continue using the URI of the Communicator Web Access (2005 release) virtual server until you are ready to enable them for enhanced presence.

  1. Deploy the Communicator Web Access (2007 release) servers for internal and external users and publish the virtual servers as described earlier in this guide.

  2. If you are going silently redirect users who are not enabled for enhanced users, configure the virtual server to do so as explained later in this section.

  3. If the users have not already been transferred to an Office Communications Server 2007 Front End Server, do that now as described in Migrating to Office Communications Server 2007.

  4. If users have not already been enabled for enhanced presence, do that now as described in the Migrating to Office Communications Server 2007.

  5. If you turned on redirection in step 2, when all users of Communicator Web access (2005 release) have been transferred to Office Communications Server 2007 and are enabled for enhanced presence, turn off redirection in the virtual server.

  6. Remove the Communicator Web Access (2005 release) server from your deployment, and then remove the software from the computer as described in the documentation for the 2005 release.
