Introduction

This article provides information about installing the Sprint location provider and notification provider for Microsoft MapPoint Location Server. The information in this article is specific to the Sprint providers and does not apply to providers for other mobile operators.

Requirements

MapPoint Location Server must be successfully installed before you install the Sprint providers. For information about how to install MapPoint Location Server, see the MapPoint Location Server Administrator's Guide. For information about how to install and configure Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates for MapPoint Location Server, see the technical article, Installing and Configuring SSL Certificates for Use with MapPoint Location Server on MSDN.

To use these providers with MapPoint Location Server, you must contact Sprint to add location services to your existing service agreement and have your phones provisioned. You can contact Sprint at SBMF-BD@mail.sprint.com.

Before you install the Sprint location and notification providers, you must obtain the following items from Sprint:

  • Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate issued by Sprint (or another mechanism provided by Sprint): Required for authentication and secure communication. If Sprint provides an SSL certificate, install the certificate on the computer on which you are installing the Sprint providers. You can install the certificate by using the Certificate snap-in to the Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

  • Sprint terminal location URL: Required for sending location requests to Sprint.

  • Maximum processing devices: Indicates the maximum number of concurrent location requests that Sprint accepts as part of your contract with Sprint.

  • Maximum queued devices: Indicates the maximum number of requests that are placed in a queue if the number of concurrent location requests exceeds the limit specified for maximum processing devices.

  • Sprint Short Message Service (SMS) URL: Required for sending SMS messages to Sprint.

You must also work with Sprint to set up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) for provider-related communication.

Location Accuracy Settings

Location accuracy is expressed as the radius within which a provisioned user can be located. A smaller radius indicates a higher degree of accuracy. The following settings are available for location accuracy:

  • Low: Less than 3 kilometers.

  • Medium: Less than 1 kilometer.

  • High: Less than 100 meters.

When installing the Sprint location provider, you must select either Low or High, depending on Sprint’s recommendation. The Sprint location provider does not support a setting of Medium.

Uninstalling the Sprint Location and Notification Provider

You can uninstall the Sprint location and notification provider by using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Caution

When you uninstall a provider, all provisioned users who are associated with that provider lose the association. As a result, those users cannot locate themselves. MapPoint Location Server does not provide a mechanism for reassociating providers with more than one user at a time. If you plan to add a new provider, each user who is not associated with a provider must be reconfigured individually. In addition, when you uninstall a provider, all custom properties that you have created in the MapPoint Location Server management console are lost. You must re-create the properties after installing a new provider.

To uninstall the Sprint location provider and notification provider

  1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs, click Microsoft MapPoint Location Server – Sprint Provider 1.0, and then click Change/Remove.

The following message is displayed: "Are you sure you want to completely remove Microsoft MapPoint Location Server – Sprint Provider 1.0 and all of its components?"

  2. To continue, click OK, or to cancel, click Cancel.

If you click OK, the InstallShield Wizard starts and removes all MapPoint Location Server Sprint provider components from the computer.

  3. When the wizard completes the uninstallation process, click Finish.

Known Issues

When you rerun Setup after an unsuccessful installation attempt, you may receive the following error after clicking Next on the Summary page:

"Error - 1603: Fatal error occurred during installation. Consult Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information."

If you receive this error, use the following procedure:

  1. Allow Setup to exit.

  2. Open Windows Task Manager, and end the ldriver.exe process and any MSIexec.exe processes that are running.

  3. Rerun Setup.
